The blue-white-black MONO eraser is so normal in Japan that it is easy to forget how iconic it looks overseas. And yes — the size really changes how it feels in a pencil case.
The classic MONO eraser is not one block — Tombow sells five standard sizes.
Tombow says the MONO eraser began as a bonus with MONO 100 pencils, became a standalone product in 1969, and now comes in five standard sizes.
A 1969 stationery standard
The familiar blue-white-black design grew from Tombow's MONO pencil family. The standard eraser is now offered in five sizes, with other variants such as MONO Black, MONO Natural and MONO Colors.

Why PE-04 is useful to know
Tombow's recent MONO Colors and MONO Natural announcements both use the PE-04-equivalent 23 × 11 × 55mm size as a familiar medium benchmark.
Variants are not necessarily weaker
Tombow states that its 2025 MONO Colors has erasing performance equivalent to the standard white MONO under its JIS-based measurements.
I like PE-04 size because it still feels like the classic MONO but doesn't disappear into a big pen pouch. Tiny erasers are cute until you actually erase a whole page.
