How Long Do Japanese Appliance Repair Parts Stay Available? Panasonic's 5–10 Year Rules
This is one of my favorite “buy the boring fact first” checks. A discontinued Japan appliance can be a bargain — until the repair-parts clock is almost over.
For long-term ownership, production end date can matter more than release date.
Panasonic publishes minimum retention periods for performance parts, counted from when production ends — and the period varies by appliance category.
Panasonic's published examples
Panasonic lists 5 years for categories such as toasters and coffee makers, 6 years for many humidifiers, cleaners and rice cookers, 8 years for microwaves and some larger appliances, 9 years for refrigerators, and 10 years for air conditioners.

The retention period starts when manufacturing is discontinued, not when you personally buy the unit.
What “performance parts” means
Panasonic defines them as parts needed to maintain the function of the product. The stated period is the minimum retention period.
Why this changes a used-import decision
A sealed eight-year-old appliance can be “new” to you while its support timeline is already advanced. This matters especially for products you cannot easily return to Japan for repair.
When an old model is 40% cheaper, I mentally subtract some of that discount if the parts-support window is already aging out.

“Discontinued” is not automatically bad, but the repair-parts clock should be part of the delivered-cost calculation.
