Japanese Laundry Symbols Explained: The 5 Basic JIS Care Symbols
Japanese clothing labels look much less scary once you realize the symbols always follow the same basic order. This is one of those tiny bits of knowledge that makes life here easier fast.
Japan's current laundry-care system uses five basic symbol groups.
The Consumer Affairs Agency explains the current JIS L0001:2024 system as washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional cleaning, in that order.
The five-symbol logic
Japan's current care-label system is designed around five basic symbol shapes. Additional lines, dots, temperatures and other marks modify the allowed treatment.
Tub symbol.
Triangle, square and iron symbols.
Circle for commercial cleaning.

Japan updated the standard in 2024
The Consumer Affairs Agency says current labels follow JIS L0001:2024, with some symbol revisions applied from August 20, 2024.
I don't try to memorize every tiny variation. I memorize the five shapes first, then check the dots, lines and numbers only when I actually wash the item.
