Japan makes mechanical-pencil lead feel like a whole hobby. I think the most useful thing is to stop asking which size is “best” and ask how small you actually write.
Lead diameter changes the whole writing experience — and the body must match exactly.
Pentel's current Ain lead range spans 0.2 to 1.3mm, with different hardness choices depending on diameter.
Three useful reference sizes
0.2mm is precision-focused, 0.3mm stays fine but is easier for many users, and 0.5mm remains the familiar general-purpose standard. Pentel also sells 0.4 and larger diameters.
20 leads per current Ain 0.2 case.
25 leads per current Ain 0.3 case.
40 leads per current Ain 0.5 case.
A 0.3mm pencil needs 0.3mm lead. Diameter is not a preference you can swap casually after buying the body.
Hardness is the second variable
Pentel's current Ain lineup offers different hardness options by diameter. For example, 0.2 includes 2B, B and HB; 0.5 has a broader range including softer grades.
If your handwriting is tiny, 0.3 can feel instantly cleaner. I would try 0.3 before jumping to 0.2 unless you specifically want ultra-fine detail.
