Japan ST Mark Explained: What the Toy Safety Mark Means for Overseas Buyers
The Japanese ST mark is a safety-standard mark — and the nearby number has a specific meaning.
The Japan Toy Association says ST-marked toys have passed conformity testing against its Toy Safety Standard by designated third-party testing bodies.
ST = Safety Toy standard system
The Japan Toy Association created the ST standard system in 1971. The standard covers mechanical safety, flammability safety and chemical safety.

What does the number beside ST mean?
The Toy Association says the two digits to the right of ST indicate the year in which the inspection application was made, or the renewal inspection application year. For example, a “25” display corresponds to a 2025 application.
Do not read ST25 as “for age 25” or as a simple expiration date.
Does ST mean every toy in Japan is automatically safe?
No mark removes the need to follow age warnings, small-parts warnings and instructions. The Toy Association also publishes recall notices for ST-marked products when necessary.
What overseas buyers should check
Look for the official mark on the retail package when applicable.
Read the manufacturer's intended age range separately.
Translate small-parts, battery and use warnings.
Imported toys must also satisfy the rules where you live.
