How to Read Japanese Food Labels: 原材料名, 内容量, 賞味期限 & More
This is one of the guides I most wanted BeeLife to have. Once you can read six little headings, shopping Japanese food gets so much less stressful.
Six Japanese label terms unlock most packaged-food basics.
Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency requires packaged foods sold in Japan to display core information in Japanese.
The back label is your best friend
Japanese packaged foods typically organize core information around headings such as 名称, 原材料名, 内容量, 賞味期限 or 消費期限, and 保存方法. Nutrition and allergen information may also appear nearby.
Usually listed in descending order by weight under Japan's rules.
Quality-oriented date for foods that keep comparatively well.
Used for foods where safety/quality declines more quickly.
The six terms
| Japanese | Meaning |
|---|---|
General product name |
Ingredients |
Net quantity |
Best-before date |
Use-by date |
Storage method |
Ingredients are especially important for overseas buyers
The ingredient panel helps with allergy checks and can also reveal meat, fruit, dairy or other ingredients that matter for customs.
If I'm buying an unfamiliar snack, I screenshot the back label before checkout. It sounds tiny, but it saves so much confusion later.
Best-before vs use-by
The Consumer Affairs Agency publishes separate guidance for expiration-date labeling. Do not treat 賞味期限 and 消費期限 as the same wording.

Bottom line
You do not need to translate the whole package. Find the structured label block first, then read the headings that answer your actual question.
